According to Paul and Luke, by the time of the Ascension they were up to 500 or more. Come Pentecost, Luke writing in Acts tells us about another 3,000 became followers that day.
Gospel of Matthew As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, called Peter and his brother Andrew . They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

The seventy disciples or seventy-two disciples (known in the Eastern Christian traditions as the seventy[-two] apostles ) were early emissaries of Jesus mentioned in the Gospel of Luke.
Throughout the Gospel of John, we see Jesus say over and over again that if people want to know what God is like, all they have to do is look at Him. Jesus reveals God to this world. This is the truth that Jesus presents in John 5:19. Jesus says that He only does what He sees the Father doing.
For them the death of Jesus was part of a divine plan to save humanity. The death and resurrection of this one man is at the very heart of the Christian faith. For Christians it is through Jesus’s death that people’s broken relationship with God is restored. This is known as the Atonement.
The passage adds: “The twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary , called Magdalene , from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna, the wife of Chuza , the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others.
Following the arrest of Jesus , Peter denied knowing him three times , but after the third denial, heard the rooster crow and recalled the prediction as Jesus turned to look at him. Peter then began to cry bitterly. This final incident is known as the Repentance of Peter.

And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

According to Mark: Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.
The assumption that the Beloved Disciple was one of the Apostles is based on the observation that he was apparently present at the Last Supper, and Matthew and Mark state that Jesus ate with the Twelve. Thus, the most frequent identification is with John the Apostle , who would then be the same as John the Evangelist .
