” What a Friend We Have in Jesus ” is a Christian hymn originally written by preacher Joseph M. Scriven as a poem in 1855 to comfort his mother, who was living in Ireland while he was in Canada. The tune to the hymn was composed by Charles Crozat Converse in 1868. William Bolcom composed a setting of the hymn.

A friend is someone who understands you, and if they don’t, they try to. A friend is somebody who is there for you when they can be, but also sets boundaries when they need to. Many things make someone a good friend , and the definition of what makes a true friendship differs from person to person.
Life. Joseph Scriven was born in 1819 of prosperous parents in Banbridge, County Down, Ireland. He graduated with a degree from Trinity College, Dublin in 1842. His fiancée accidentally drowned in 1843, the night before they were to be married .
