Genealogy and nativity. Jesus was Jewish, born to Mary, wife of Joseph ( Matthew 1; Luke 2). The Gospels of Matthew and Luke offer two accounts of the genealogy of Jesus. Matthew traces Jesus’ ancestry to Abraham through David .
Where was Mary born? According to old traditions, Mary was born in Jerusalem . Joachim is said to have been the owner of a home in the vicinity of the temple, more precisely near the Sheep Gate and its pool called in Hebrew, “Bethesda.”
So she would have been Mariam bat Joachim or Mary of Nazareth. Her son Jesus would have gone with Yeshua ben Yosef ( Jesus , son of Joseph, even though he really wasn’t) or Yeshua of Nazareth. Last names did not come into vogue for over a thousand years. Her married name was Mary Christ .
Mary of Nazareth –whose name is written at times in the Hebraic form, Mariam–was a chaste young Jewish girl betrothed to a devout Jewish man, Joseph. The portrait of her in the New Testament is that of a prayerful Jewish woman with very human traits who aspired to follow the practices set by Jewish law and religion.
In the Hebrew Bible (Exodus 3:14), Yahweh , the personal name of God, is revealed directly to Moses .
Jesus ‘ real name , Yeshua, evolved over millennia in a case of transliteration. Wikimedia CommonsThe Greek transliteration of Jesus ‘ real name , “Iēsous”, and the late Biblical Hebrew version “Yeshua”.
Jesus ‘ brothers and sisters The Gospel of Mark (6:3) and the Gospel of Matthew (13:55–56) mention James, Joseph/Joses, Judas/Jude and Simon as brothers of Jesus , the son of Mary .
Jesus had five brothers, namely, James (Ya’qov), Simon (Shim’on), Judah (Yehudah), Joses (Yosef) and Thomas (Toma’). And he also had two sisters, Rachel (Rakhel) and Lea (Le’ah).
Summary of Jesus ‘ life He was born to Joseph and Mary sometime between 6 bce and shortly before the death of Herod the Great (Matthew 2; Luke 1:5) in 4 bce. According to Matthew and Luke, however, Joseph was only legally his father .
Jesus does not have a last name . Last names were not common in those times. Christ is not a name , but a title. Christ means “anointed” or “Messiah”, so Jesus became the “Christ” or “Messiah” when he got baptized at the age of 30.
According to the apocryphal Gospel of James, Mary was the daughter of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne. Before Mary’s conception, Anne had been barren and was far advanced in years.
— — A new book based on interpretations of ancient texts features an explosive claim: Jesus Christ married Mary Magdalene , and the couple had two children.
However, now we believe that Mary and Joseph were both in their teens when Jesus was born , around sixteen and eighteen respectively. This was the norm for Jewish newlyweds at that time.
Mary Magdalene as trusted disciple For its part, the Bible gave no hint that Mary Magdalene was Jesus’s wife . None of the four canonical gospels suggests that sort of relationship, even though they list the women who travel with Jesus and in some cases include their husbands’ names.
So, according to tradition, Mary was 14–16 years old when Jesus was born. Given that Jesus died at 33, that would make her 47–49 years old at His death.
