Ascension, in Christian belief, the ascent of Jesus Christ into heaven on the 40th day after his Resurrection (Easter being reckoned as the first day). The Feast of the Ascension ranks with Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost in the universality of its observance among Christians.
Jesus ascended to Heaven only ONE time. The Gospels according to St. Mark and St. Luke tell about Jesus ‘ ascension to Heaven after 40 days after His resurection from the dead.
The Christian Bible, in the Old Testament, records that both the prophet Elijah and the patriarch Enoch were bodily assumed into Heaven on a chariot of fire. Jesus is considered by the vast majority of Christians to have died before being resurrected and ascending to heaven.
Christians believe that after Jesus rose from the dead, he did not die a second time. Instead, 40 days after his resurrection , Jesus left the Earth by being taken up, body and soul, to Heaven to re-join God the Father. This event is called the ascension , and it was witnessed by Jesus ‘ eleven remaining apostles .
Biblical accounts The biblical narrative in Chapter 1 of the Acts of the Apostles takes place 40 days after the Resurrection . Acts 1 describes a meal at which Jesus commands the disciples to await the coming of the Holy Spirit.
After being baptized by John the Baptist, Jesus was tempted by the devil for 40 days and nights in the Judaean Desert. Jesus having refused each temptation, Satan then departed and Jesus returned to Galilee to begin his ministry. During this entire time of spiritual battle, Jesus was fasting.
Most scholars reckon Jesus was crucified between 30 and 33AD, so 1985-8 years ago. Seeing as we can assume Jesus was about 30 when he was baptised and began his ministry, we know he was over 30 when he was crucified.
The earliest Christians maintained that Jesus was a human being who was made God – a god – a divine being. Later they ended up saying that Jesus was born to the union of God and a mortal because the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and that’s how she conceived Jesus , so Jesus literally had God as his father.
Using these methods, most scholars assume a date of birth between 6 and 4 BC, and that Jesus’ preaching began around AD 27–29 and lasted one to three years . They calculate the death of Jesus as having taken place between AD 30 and 36.
The ‘anointed’ Based on their understanding of scriptures such as Revelation 14:1-4, Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that exactly 144,000 faithful Christians go to heaven to rule with Christ in the kingdom of God.
In religious or mythological cosmology, the seven heavens refer to seven levels or divisions of the Heavens (Heaven). The concept, also found in the ancient Mesopotamian religions, can be found in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; a similar concept is also found in some other religions such as Hinduism.
The World English Bible translates the passage as: Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will . enter into the Kingdom of Heaven ; but he who. does the will of my Father who is in heaven .
Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again’ (Luke 24:5–7) . The female followers then returned to tell Jesus ‘ apostles and other people that Jesus had risen from the dead.
In Luke: ” Father , forgive them, for they know not what they do” “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise (in response to one of the two thieves crucified next to him) ” Father , into your hands I commit my spirit” (last words)
According to all four gospels, Jesus was brought to the “Place of a Skull” and crucified with two thieves, with the charge of claiming to be “King of the Jews”, and the soldiers divided his clothes before he bowed his head and died .
