The theme, “Who You Say I Am”, is from John 8, which is, you will know, the truth and the truth will set you free. Jesus says, ‘who the Son sets free, is free indeed. ‘ It’s a real declaration of identity. When I introduced this song into our church, I read John 8, the Scripture this song is based on.
Mark 8 : 29 ESV And he asked them, “ But who do you say that I am ?” Peter answered him, “ You are the Christ .” This is the first time since the very first verse of this Gospel that the word Christ has been used.
‘” ‘Ehyeh is the first person form of hayah, “to be”, and owing to the peculiarities of Hebrew grammar means “I am “, “I was”, and “I will be”. “I am who I am ” – an evasion of Moses’s question; “I am who am ” or “I am he who is” – a statement of the nature of Israel’s God [‘Elohiym];
Matthew 16 takes place in the region of Magadan and is a continuation of the events reported in Matthew 15 (Jesus feeds the four thousand after healing masses of people) beginning with the request of signs from Heaven from the Pharisees and Sadducees. After some debate the Peter claimed that Jesus was the Christ.
Afterward, according to the Gospel of Saint Mark, as he walked north toward Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples, “Who do men say that I am ?” And thus, seeking guidance, seeking perhaps to ken the range of possibilities, Jesus put the question to his followers. It is an affecting and very human moment.
Yahweh, the god of the Israelites, whose name was revealed to Moses as four Hebrew consonants (YHWH) called the tetragrammaton. After the Babylonian Exile (6th century bce), and especially from the 3rd century bce on, Jews ceased to use the name Yahweh for two reasons.
What was Jesus ‘ point in the teaching ? In Matthew 5:21-24 Jesus taught that whether the sin be murder or anything of the sort; all sins are as bad as murder and are subject to judgment in the eyes of the lord. Being angry with someone or having malice no matter how big or how small is still a sin.
In Matthew 16:15, Jesus asked Peter, “ Who do you say that I am ?” I propose that this is the most important question in a person’s life. In verse 29 of our scripture passage, the demons recognized Jesus as “the Son of God.” James 2:19 reads, “ You believe that God is one; you do well.
The Hebrew word “Mashiach,” meaning Messiah , means “the one anointed with oil.” The custom of anointing with oil is a ritual act designed to elevate those designated for priestly, royal or sometimes even prophetic roles (such as the prophet Elisha).
In the Hebrew Bible (Exodus 3:14), Yahweh , the personal name of God, is revealed directly to Moses .
Yahweh is the name of the God of the Bible. He is the God to whom Jesus prayed. Similarly, Jesus is an Anglicised version of a Greek version of the name Ιησούς, which, itself, in Hebrew is יהושע, commonly Joshua in English. So Jesus and Joshua are effectively the same name.
The Koine Greek term Ego eimi (Greek Ἐγώ εἰμί, pronounced [eɣó imí]), literally I am or It is I, is an emphatic form of the copulative verb εἰμι that is recorded in the Gospels to have been spoken by Jesus on several occasions to refer to himself not with the role of a verb but playing the role of a name, in the Gospel
The exact translation varies slightly depending on the version of the Bible, but it is generally translated into English as: “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Gospel of Matthew 16 :2b–3 (the signs of the times ), the passage describes a confrontation between Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees over their demand for a sign from heaven. It is one of several passages of the New Testament that are absent from many early manuscripts.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:9-13 (ESV):“ 9 Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven , hallowed be your name. 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven . No doubt about it, what God says is what His heavenly beings do.
