On December 27, we celebrate the Feast of Saint John , Apostle and Evangelist – the “ disciple Jesus loved ” ( John 13:23). As the author of a Gospel account, three epistles, and the book of Revelation, John was not only a close friend of Jesus during his time, but a spiritual teacher for the ages.
John was the son of Zebedee, a Galilean fisherman, and Salome. John and his brother St. James were among the first disciples called by Jesus . Whether the “disciple whom Jesus loved” (who is never named) mentioned in this Gospel is to be identified with John (also not named) is not clear from the text.
Disciple, the Apostle John. There would be only four disciples of Jesus , if the unnamed disciple of John were Philip . The narrative of the chapter centers about the two followers of the Baptist who are represented as the nucleus of the Twelve.
John’s is the only one of the four not considered among the Synoptic Gospels (i.e., those presenting a common view). Although the Gospel is ostensibly written by St. John the Apostle, “the beloved disciple” of Jesus , there has been considerable discussion of the actual identity of the author.

While a disciple is a student, one who learns from a teacher, an apostle is sent to deliver those teachings to others. ” Apostle ” means messenger, he who is sent. An apostle is sent to deliver or spread those teachings to others. We can say that all apostles were disciples but all disciples are not apostles .

A period of forty years separates the death of Jesus from the writing of the first gospel.
The Gospel of John mentions Lazarus again in chapter 12. Six days before the Passover on which Jesus is crucified, Jesus returns to Bethany and Lazarus attends a supper that Martha, his sister, serves. This is to be clear that Lazarus has died in the flesh, and is not sleeping or unconscious.
