Tiberius Caesar Augustus (/taɪˈbɪəriəs/ ty-BEER-ee-əs; 16 November 42 BC – 16 March AD 37) was the second Roman emperor, reigning from AD 14 to 37. He succeeded his stepfather, Augustus .
Chances are he had no idea. Jesus was probably born between 6 BC and 4 BC, while Augustus died in AD 14. As someone else has written, Augustus died in 14 AD, when Jesus would have been around 19 or 20 years old — so it’s highly unlikely that Augustus would have known of Him.
Herod the king , behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, The New International Version translates the passage as: After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time . of King Herod , Magi from the east came to Jerusalem.
One of the farthest corners of the Roman Empire , Judaea was a land of ancient traditions and religious fervor. Decades of Roman rule were causing ever more resentment. Jesus was born to a family from a village called Nazareth, near the Sea of Galilee.
To many Romans, the reign of Augustus marked the point at which Rome had rediscovered its true calling. They believed that, under his rule and with his dynasty , they had the leadership to get there. At his death, Augustus , the ‘son of a god’, was himself declared a god.
Not only was Jesus dead, but he died by crucifixion, as a traitor to Rome . And the preaching of the imminent kingdom of God had not materialized. Two responses arose in the communities of his followers.
They answered, ” Caesar’s ,” and he responded: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s ; and unto God the things that are God’s”. The questioners were impressed. Matthew 22:22 states that they “marvelled” (ἐθαύμασαν); unable to trap him any further, and being satisfied with the answer, they went away.
In AD 193, Lucius Septimius Severus was named ruler of the Roman Empire and in doing so became Rome’s first African Emperor . After emerging victorious from a period of civil war, Severus expanded the border of the empire to new heights, ushered in a period of imperial transformation and founded a dynasty.
“ Jesus was born into essentially a third- world context under a military dictatorship. It was a society where everyone was coerced.” As in most agrarian societies, about 10% of the population was born into nobility and lived lavishly.
He spent a few years in Egypt, traveled south to Ethiopia, west to Italy, and as far east as Armenia.
Bethlehem lies 10 kilometres south of the city of Jerusalem, in the fertile limestone hill country of the Holy Land. Since at least the 2nd century AD people have believed that the place where the Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem , now stands is where Jesus was born.
The earliest Christians maintained that Jesus was a human being who was made God – a god – a divine being. Later they ended up saying that Jesus was born to the union of God and a mortal because the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and that’s how she conceived Jesus , so Jesus literally had God as his father.
