Caligula was way worse than Nero . It would be Caligula . Nero was a completely insane person, really his mind snapped from the pressure. He was actually not the worst of people, during the great fire of Rome he did not fiddle, instead he ran through the streets with his men directing people to safety.
Chances are he had no idea. Jesus was probably born between 6 BC and 4 BC, while Augustus died in AD 14. As someone else has written, Augustus died in 14 AD, when Jesus would have been around 19 or 20 years old — so it’s highly unlikely that Augustus would have known of Him.
The 5 Worst Roman Emperors Caligula : 37 – 41 AD. A bust of Caligula . Nero : 54 – 68 AD. As with all emperors, the horror stories may be the work of his enemies, but Nero has many to his name. Commodus : 180 – 192 AD. Caracalla : 198 – 217 AD. Maximinus Thrax : 235 to 238 AD.
Caligula is often remembered as a selfish and capricious ruler whose ineptitude weakened the Roman empire during his four-year reign.
The Roman emperor Nero is considered one of history’s greatest criminals. His name has become synonymous with evil, as historic accounts have accused him of killing his stepbrother, his wife and his mother, as well persecuting Christians and instigating the devastating Great Fire of Rome.
Nero is perhaps the best known of the worst emperors, having allowed his wife and mother to rule for him and then stepping out from their shadows and ultimately having them, and others, murdered. But his transgressions go far beyond just that; he was accused of sexual perversions and the murder of many Roman citizens.
To the Romans , Jesus was a troublemaker who had got his just desserts. To the Christians, however, he was a martyr and it was soon clear that the execution had made Judaea even more unstable. Pontius Pilate – the Roman governor of Judaea and the man who ordered the crucifixion – was ordered home in disgrace.
Not only was Jesus dead, but he died by crucifixion, as a traitor to Rome . And the preaching of the imminent kingdom of God had not materialized. Two responses arose in the communities of his followers.
They answered, ” Caesar’s ,” and he responded: “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s ; and unto God the things that are God’s”. The questioners were impressed. Matthew 22:22 states that they “marvelled” (ἐθαύμασαν); unable to trap him any further, and being satisfied with the answer, they went away.

Livia persuaded him to choose Tiberius, his stepson from Livia’s first marriage to Tiberius Claudius Nero, instead. As part of the succession arrangements, Augustus adopted Tiberius on 26 June AD 4, but first required him to adopt Germanicus , thus placing him next in the line of succession after Tiberius.
