The account notes that Jesus loved Lazarus and his sisters and that when Lazarus died of illness, Jesus wept and was “greatly disturbed.” Although Lazarus had been entombed for four days by the time Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was raised by Jesus from the dead and emerged from the tomb wearing his burial cloths.
The story goes that Jesus was sent for to heal one of his followers, Lazarus, but he arrived too late; Lazarus had already died. Jesus was deeply upset and cried. So the reference to this verse is actually really smart, as it mirrors the story of Nell’s death.
Jesus shows the world that he has power over death When their brother fell ill, the sisters sent a messenger to Jesus to tell him Lazarus was sick. Through this story of Lazarus , the Bible delivers a powerful message to the world: Jesus Christ has power over death and those who believe in him receive resurrection life.
When the news of Lazarus sickness reached Jesus , Jesus was at the place called Bethabara beyond the Jordan. The distance between Bethany and Bethabara is around 15 to 20 miles, i.e. a day’s journey.
Lazarus died so that Jesus’ power over death would be apparent to his disciples. He was showing them something better than healing. He was proving he has the power to raise us from death. Jesus explained quite clearly that his purpose was to reveal God’s glory.
One day, Lazarus got very sick. His sisters sent word to Jesus and told him about their brother and asked Him to come. Jesus was in another town, so He didn’t come right away. When Jesus finally arrived, Martha ran to meet Him and told Him that Lazarus had died four days earlier.
This is the first of three miracles of Jesus in the canonical gospels in which he raises the dead , the other two being the raising of Jairus’ daughter and of Lazarus.

As far as Jesus possibly having a dog as a pet , it is highly unlikely. Using the word, ” dog ” was a derogatory term often used by Hebrews when describing Gentiles. Dogs like swine were considered to be unclean animals that carried disease.

When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ” Lazarus , come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
